Bodegas Miguel Merino is a highly enterprising and creative wine producer in Rioja Alta in Spain. Production is small and the fruit is sourced from very old vineyards. The winery is one of the smallest in Rioja and relatively young. The first vintage was released in 1994, which practically makes it a fledgling in Rioja terms. The founder, Miguel Merino, was a much-loved wine personality in Rioja and internationally, and did a great deal to spread knowledge of Spanish wine in general and Rioja in particular. Today his son Miguel makes the wines and runs the estate with his family. In the Tim Atkin Rioja Report, the estate, Miguel and the wines are year after year ranked near the top, and young Miguel's wines have become increasingly hard to get hold of. The single-varietal Mazuelo is one example of the ambition and appetite for experimentation that set the estate apart.
