Sangarida

Anyone who suspects that Sangarida in Bierzo is connected to the Rias Baixas producer Attis Bodegas y Viñedos is quite right. According to the producer's own interpretation of Greek mythology, the Anatolian mother goddess Cybele was so enraged at the handsome youth Attis for wanting to marry the tree nymph Sangarida that she struck him with a madness that ended in self-castration. This story is perhaps not entirely in line with modern feel-good sensibilities, and it doesn't appear to be entirely true either, but it makes for great storytelling, so we'll take it. A more grounded story, more in the feel-good tradition and, as far as we know, more in line with the truth, is that brothers Robustiano and Baldomero Fariña in 2019 expanded Attis' interests to Bierzo, an area not too far from Rias Baixas. On top of that, it's also an area where Robustiano's wife comes from, and knowing this, it's not so surprising that Robustiano's daughter Lia was given the task of leading Sangarida to the same success that her father and uncle had already achieved with Attis. Said and done. In record time, Lia and her team have got the operation up to full speed, today encompassing six hectares of well-maintained vineyards. Just as with Attis, the principles here are old vines, low yields, sustainable and where applicable regenerative farming, spontaneous fermentation, and restraint with sulphites. Normally, the wines are neither fined nor filtered. The grapes are mencía, godello, and doña blanca.
