Celler Masroig

Celler Masroig
Fairly early on, we set our sights on Masroig in Montsant. An area in Spain where the wines usually taste better than their price suggests. In recent years, we have visited the producer on several occasions. The result is now Les Sorts Selecció, a wine that was launched in Sweden in the first half of 2019 (later followed by a white sibling as well). The small area of Montsant is found along the winding, climbing road from Tarragona to the perhaps better known Priorat. Like the neighbouring appellation Priorat, a great deal of garnacha and cariñena is grown here at high altitude. Annual rainfall in some parts is as low as 250-300 mm. The positive side is that the vines barely need any spraying at all. The downside is that producers occasionally have to resort to irrigation. Some of Masroig's vineyards are organically certified, with more hectares added each year. Overall, water use is restrained, and the goal is to use as little fertiliser as possible, intervening only when and where necessary. Depending on the site, Masroig chooses to either grow grass between the rows, plough, or both.
