Les Sorts Serra Catalana
Les Sorts Serra Catalana
A high-quality bag-in-box from "Les Sorts". For those who don't usually buy box wine. Serra Catalana is a sibling to the popular Les Sorts. The wine ferments and ages in the same cellar as Les Sorts, and the grapes grow in the same mountain area, a few dozen kilometres west of Tarragona and the Mediterranean coast. The grape blend is grenache, carignan and merlot. While the first two grapes are hardly surprising — they are the area's two greats — merlot may raise a few eyebrows. What is merlot doing in these parts? The answer is that much merlot was planted in the good old days when the large American market was clamouring for the grape. In short, the US was insatiable for merlot. But then came that film Sideways — the one where pinot noir is praised and merlot is dismissed. The grape had become a victim of its own popularity, and sales dropped rapidly. As a consequence, growers in Serra Catalana, the mountains above Tarragona, suddenly had a lot of unsaleable wine. Well, one man's loss is another's gain. This surplus of first-class merlot explains the reasonable price of the Serra Catalana box (Les Sorts). Without the film Sideways, no Serra Catalana at a bargain price. The majority of the grapes in Serra Catalana are grown within DO Montsant. The reason the producer has also included a smaller portion of grapes from vineyard sites just outside the appellation boundary is to ensure the affordable price.

Vinification
The wine is made from selected grapes from vineyards in and around Montsant in the mountains west of Tarragona, "Serra Catalana". Vine age is 25–40 years. After harvest, skin maceration and fermentation take place over 8–10 days in temperature-controlled tanks (20–24°C). Malolactic fermentation also occurs in stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged for six months in 300-litre French oak barrels that have been used once or twice before.
