Hedges Family Estate

The Hedges family, or as it would later come to be called Hedges Family Estate, began their wine career in the late 1980s in Sweden. More precisely, it was a listing at the Swedish alcohol monopoly that set everything in motion. Before that stroke of luck, Anne-Marie and Tom Hedges were in the food business in general. The sales in Sweden provided the financial base they needed to buy land on the then unexplored Red Mountain in Eastern Washington and, eventually, build their own winery there. Tom comes from nearby Richland and was the one who saw the potential in Red Mountain. Today, it's hard to believe that the flourishing mini-appellation Red Mountain was a dusty hill just 25 years ago. Now several beautiful wineries sit on the mountain, and at its most central point we find Hedges Family Estate. Here they grow and produce what must be regarded as the appellation's first great wine, Hedges Family Estate (Red Mountain), the new syrah wine DLD, and the exclusive "Limiteds," which are made in editions of just a couple of barrels. As an anecdote, it is the Swedish winemaker Lars Torstenson who for many years has been the one assembling the Limited wines at Hedges.
