Oxer Bastegieta, a proud Basque, began making Txakoli in 1999 in his birthplace of Gernika. Convinced of the strength of old vines, he constantly seeks out the best sites with old stocks in Rioja Alavesa. This is the smallest sub-region of La Rioja and has vineyards at up to 800 metres elevation. The Atlantic's cool influence combined with the limestone-rich soil produces wines of great finesse. Bizkaiko Txakoli lies to the north of Rioja Alavesa.
