Mullineux Iron Syrah

Vinification

The grapes come exclusively from the iron-rich soils west of Malmesbury. The vines are approximately 16 years old and provide a very distinct expression of the generous style that syrah from this soil type exhibits. The grapes were hand-harvested on 8 February 2011 and whole clusters were placed in 500L oak barrels, after which a light foot-treading was carried out. After about three days, fermentation began naturally and the temperature was kept below 30°C. Fermentation lasted approximately 14 days, after which skins and must macerated for four weeks before pressing. The wine was then blended and aged 18 months in French oak barrels (500L), of which 50% were new.
