Vinification
Harvest began in early September and continued into early October before all grapes were brought in. At the winery, the grapes are pressed and the must ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. After fermentation, the wine is aged 10 months in French oak barrels, of which 8% are new and the remainder are one-year-old barrels. The wine is then bottled and rests for nearly a year before release. At the 1976 Judgement of Paris, the Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay 1973 was named the tasting's best white wine — to the great surprise and frustration of the French (and many others).
