Imagine you're sitting in a restaurant in San Francisco. You're waiting for the crab and avocado tartare you ordered and have just sent the sommelier off with the mission to "show us something new, up-and-coming, and that you personally really love." After a short while, she returns and pours a white wine that completely takes us by surprise. The wine is called Abraxas, and it turns out to be our first but certainly not last encounter with Robert Sinskey's wines... Robert Sinskey is a biodynamic wine producer who, at the time of the above event, had five vineyards in Napa's Stags Leap District and Carneros in Sonoma and a fairly extensive portfolio of wines. Since then, Doctor Sinskey, as he is known for his deep knowledge of the subject of wine, has regrouped. The former winery and visitor facility has been sold and a new facility has been built a bit further away in Carneros. A facility that is more integrated with nature. Here, birds fly freely among grazing livestock and lush flowers, and, of course, well-tended vines. Already in the early 1990s, the doctor and his winemaking team set their sights on organic farming. Today, the cultivation has long been biodynamic. Forward-thinking, you might say, and indeed it is, but it's not only in the area of viticulture that Rob, as the doctor is also called, and the team at RSV have been at the forefront. In terms of wine style too, they lead the way for the new, more restrained and elegant approach that actually works well with food and is gaining ever more ground in California. Or as Rob himself puts it: "wine should not be a quick study, but rather, sneak up on you, seduce you, and evolve in the glass and in the bottle." In any case, we're talking about small volumes of exclusive wines that don't necessarily cost a fortune, which we are very glad about.
